Half of this pile is Kulap’s fault
The “To Read Soon” pile on my desk is always filled with an eclectic mix of American and World History, Comedian Memoirs, and the occasional fiction book. But now, after listening to months of Kulap Vilaysack talking about comic books on the Who Charted? podcast, I decided to dip my foot in again (which leads to diving in head first).
I read comic books when I was younger (back in the Marvel “Secret Wars” days) and have picked up a random trade/compilation book over the years, but only recently have I been the “build a pick list” and “Is it Wednesday yet?” kind of guy.
This week I picked up a great book that just started called “Revival.” It’s a different twist on the well-worn zombie idea. I love Mike Norton’s art and just did a “BattlePug” marathon (Mike’s online comic-hey I have a pug). Plus I caught up on “Saga” a great sci-fi/trippy book that is illustrated beautifully by Fiona Staples. I have also gone back and started “The Sandman” books again. How could I not? Of course I had to pick up the “Batgirl” where Gail Simone worked in a character based on Kulap. And to some people’s chagrin I’ve been reading the “Before Watchmen” series. Don’t judge me.
So the joke here is that I am “blaming” Kulap - but really I am thanking her for unconsciously getting me to seek out my local brick & mortar comic shop (Main Street Comics in Milltown, NJ) and start finding awesome stories and art that I have been missing out on for so long.
Thanks KuKu!
